Modern Contemporary Home Apartment by BAKOKO Design

When architects design a home for themselves, it’s always spectacular. Take a look at what architects Alastair Townsend and Kayoko Ohtsuki of BAKOKO Design & Development have done with this small 400 sq. ft. apartment on the outskirts of Tokyo. Guided by the idea of a clean, bright, modern home that serves as a place to work and a place to rest, Townsend and Ohtsuki created this modern-minimal flat with an optimum use of space. What makes the Matsudo mansion really unique are the small luxurious details – things such as the tatami mat rest area, the Hinoki wood decking in the bathroom and the kitchen’s overhead garden make this contemporary home stand out.

Unique Building Long Barn Studio by Nicolas Tye Architects

Take an award winning barn conversion set amongst rolling hills and woodland; and try to add an award winning studio to it. This is exactly what Nicolas Tye Architects have done. The 2,200 square foot ‘Long barn studio’ has been set against Nicolas Tye’s award Winning Barn conversion home set in the Bedfordshire countryside.
Central to the philosophy of Nicolas Tye Architects is that design is generated by the needs of people.” Today, the welfare of people, the environment and for the use of friendly materials and energy saving devices has never been more imperative; a notion that has truly influenced and grown with them, ever expanding their popularity. What a better way to express this belief in healthy living, than to build a stunning and highly unique building designed for the needs of its own workers.”
The new studio, which took 10 months to build is used by Nicolas Tye and his employees. The studio is a strong example of the teams philosophy. This can be seen in the respect of the building complimenting its cultural surroundings yet still adhering to a clean elegant style that is fitting to the era. The Studio is suited to its purpose and for fills the modern working life of the studio member within.
The exterior of the studio is a simple glazed rectangular frame that holds frameless 3.2m glazed panels that have a slight green tint to reflect the surrounding landscape. The large windows allow any person that is lucky enough to work within, breathtaking framed panoramics of the surrounding landscape.
The long glass section is capped by two full height larch clad pods. The course of the building intersects a series of other larch clad pods which house meeting rooms, a library, a printing area and a WC. Arcing back to the original barns history, Cor-ten Steel detailing is used to place the new studio and reference the old farm machinery and steelwork of the past.
The Cor-ten and the Larch cladding compliment each other, the barn and the surroundings. The workspace is bespoke and tailored to the needs of the employees. Floating screens and wireless keyboards help to maximise productivity. Deep desks and custom cabinets help to keep this a user friendly environment. As well as being a user friendly environment, the studio is also an environmentally friendly building. The Studio incorporates rainwater harvesting, its own wind turbine, whole building air heat recovery circulation system, centralised lighting control (which utilises low energy lighting), organic planting and non toxic chemical sealers. All of these green features help to reenforce Nicolas Tye’s philosophy and to make his studio revered by his peers.
